Our History

Forty years in the wings

From a borrowed stage in 1986 to a Maine State Drama Festival mainstay — the milestones that made the company.

1986

The curtain rises

The Theatre Company is founded in Falmouth, Maine with just fourteen students. Over the seasons that follow it becomes a beloved fixture of the town's cultural life — at its height drawing well over a hundred performers, technicians, and volunteers to a single season, with families building sets, sewing costumes, and running the house.

1996–1999

A state powerhouse

The Company becomes a fixture at the Maine State Drama Festival. Two Precious Maidens Ridiculed (1996) and Michael Frayn's Audience (1998) both advance to the New England Drama Festival, and Picasso at the Lapin Agile (1999) carries the Company to the state finals in Bangor — eight trips to states in ten years, and a reputation as 'one of the state's powerhouse theatre companies.'

2005

FESTIVAL, the documentary

Maine filmmakers Jim and Tom Isler release FESTIVAL, a feature documentary following the Company's run through the state one-act competition. It premieres at the Maine International Film Festival and puts a national spotlight on the program.

2009

The Clayton David Thomas Memorial Fund

Following the loss of a beloved former student, the Company establishes the Clayton David Thomas Memorial Fund, awarding scholarships to graduating seniors who carry the work forward.

2014

Charm wins regionals

Kathleen Cahill's Charm takes the Class A regional crown and finishes state runner-up, advancing to the New England Drama Festival — among the program's strongest festival showings of the decade.

2015

Falmouth hosts the Festival

The Company hosts the Maine State Drama Festival on its own stage and competes with an adaptation of Don Quixote, earning a Judges' Commendation for its design — including a memorable hand-built horse and donkey.

2020

The show goes on, online

Thieves' Carnival wins the Class A regional, and Falmouth is set to host the state finals — until the spring closure intervenes. The Company answers by staging Fiddler on the Roof remotely, proving the work could not be stopped, only moved.

Drawn from archival cast lists and Maine State Drama Festival records. The company’s alumni number in the thousands across four decades — these are a few whose names the public record preserves. The earliest rosters (1986–2009) survive only in yearbooks and printed festival programs; if you hold any, we’d love to add those names here.
